Reach for the Stars

"Reach for the Stars, but keep your feet on the ground" has been a saying I have always liked and have tried to apply to my life and to the school. It gives a sense of purpose and balance to what we do. On the one hand, we need to have vision and strive to be the best we possibly can be. On the other hand, we need to be realistic about what is possible with the resources at hand. The visionary emphasizes the first clause and may become frustrated with things as they are. The pragmatist emphasizes the second clause and can become complacent with things as they are. The trick of course is to blend and balance both ideas.

Applied to the school, it means that we must no lose sight of our goals for the long term. (And it seems that the long term is longer than I had once thought!) Some of those goals include such things as a properly equipped gymnasium, work shop for industrial ed., a kitchen for Home Ec., a stage for drama, a music room for band. In the meantime, however, we need to rejoice in all that is being done with the resources at hand and enjoy God’s goodness to us. We have excellent teachers, committed parents, faithful board members, and fantastic students. Our program continues to demonstrate its strength in all the critical areas: reading, writing, ‘rithmetic, science, social, etc., etc.

Every now and then an opportunity comes along which, I feel, will enable us to get just a bit closer to the "stars" and is yet is close enough to "ground level" to be within our grasp. For years I have wanted to see AKCS develop a bell choir, and I am hoping to see it begin next fall. It will add an excellent and exciting instrumental dimension to our music program, and at the same time is something which can be done within our limited space and size. We have the teacher, we have the students, and we have $3500 toward the total costs of a starter set of bells ($6,000-$6500). So, a bit more and we are there.

On April 30th, the Glenmore Christian School band and bell choir will be performing for us in the sanctuary of the Baptist Church from 12:45 to 1: 30pm. All parents are invited to attend this. You are in for a treat. I think once you hear this, you will fall in love with it as I have. If so, perhaps you would then be moved to make a donation to our Bell Choir Fund. Donation or not, you will really enjoy this.
