Parent-Teacher Interviews
are coming up this week! These meetings provide an opportunity for two-way
communication regarding the progress of children in the school. The goal is to
help the home and school work more effectively together. While, generally,
these meetings are very productive and encouraging, they can be just the
opposite unless one understands some of the common
pitfalls to avoid.
First, there is sometimes
a tendency on the part of both parents and teachers to be defensive. Parents are concerned
that the achievement and behavior of their children may reflect negatively on
their home.
Second, there can be a
tendency to focus on problems exclusively. The problems are important, to be sure,
but they should be kept in perspective. God has created each child with
strengths and weaknesses, gifts and shortcomings, all of which should be
considered. Don't forget to celebrate the accomplishments and positive
character traits of each child.
Third, there is a tendency
to focus on the past. Discussion of problems in the past should lead to some ideas for
solutions in the future. If there have been problems, we should look for ways
to avoid them, if successes, we should look for ways to build upon them.
Fourth, there often is a
lingering fear that the concerns (on both sides) will not be taken seriously. Sometimes this is
because the things discussed in the interview are forgotten or were unclear to
begin with. Making notes during the interview can help keep things clear later
on. A follow-up phone call can be a big help to ensure that parents and
teachers are continuing to work for the same goals.
Parent Teacher Interviews in Christian schools are usually a time
of great encouragement for both parents and teachers. It is a time for both to
realize once again that not only are we working together, but the Holy Spirit
is also at work helping us and our children to achieve our common goals. To
know that prayers are going up to God at both home and school for parents,
teachers, and students alike is a great comfort to us all.
Yours in the unity of the Spirit,
Principal
P.S.: Please bring your
children’s Report Cards to the interview. Thanks!
